How Do I Get A Pool Safety Certificate

If you need a pool safety certificate, you need to find a licensed pool safety inspector to arrange your inspection.

You will need to have your pool registered, and a safety check completed before your safety certificate will be issued.

Since 2009, all swimming pools must comply with certain safety standards with regard to 5 year old and under.

This became law that year because of the unacceptable levels of drownings among that age group.

Although safety advice and best practice had been available for years, the government acted to make it law.

Combined with supervision, having a pool safety certificate makes children as safe as possible around swimming pools.

If you have a pool on your property, you must satisfy certain conditions before you can sell or rent out. Of course, if you have children, you’ll want to keep them safe at all times too.

What to do Before Your Inspection

Getting A Pool Safety Certificate

A Pool Safety Certificate is also known as a Form 23. This piece of paperwork itself is part of the Building Act 1975, which lays down Queensland property standards.

If you have a private or shared pool, a Form 23 certifies that it complies with these buildings’ standards. In doing so, it details the Pool Safety Inspector Licence Number.

Pool safety inspectors themselves have to be licensed with the Pool Safety Council.

This trains inspectors to the standards required to ensure all safety standards have been met.

After inspecting your pool and finding it safe to use, they will use a Pool Safety Certificate Number.

These numbers themselves have to be purchased in advance by the Council.

There are two reasons why your pool may be exempted from total compliance.

These are a local government disability / impracticality exemption, or an approved alternative solution which is already in force.

Details of these have to be entered onto the form, including whether your pool is shared or non-shared.

High Standards

As you can see, obtaining a Pool Safety Certificate is something to be taken seriously.

To even apply for one, however, your pool needs to be registered. Your pool safety inspector can do this for you as part of their inspection service. Once on the Pool Safety Register, your details can be easily checked.

If you wish to sell or rent out your property, you must have some form of pool safety in place.

If you don’t have a completed Form 23, the obligation passes to your buyer or renter.

They can take over the property without a Form 23 if they sign another form.

This is the Notice of No Pool Safety Certificate or Form 36. This binds the owner or renter to obtain their own Form 23 within 90 days.

Having either a Form 23 or 36 ensures that the issue of pool safety has been taken seriously.

Not only does this help keep children safe, it complies with building regulations.

Absence of any sort of pool safety certificate will delay property transactions.
